Madagascar is an incredibly diverse country, much larger than most assume. Isolated from any other landmass for at least 88 million years, it developed epic landscapes and endemic flora and fauna that is quite unlike anything else. Five percent of the world’s animal and plant species are only found in Madagascar – look forward to seeing lemurs, fossas, chameleons, weird insects, humpback whales, rays and turtles. The towering baobab trees are another icon of Madagascar that you it’s impossible to miss.
The far ranging landscapes and vastness of the island mean that Madagascar is a true adventure destination. Large swathes are unexplored and uninhabited, the roads are mainly dusty or muddy trails, only to be explored by 4WD, and the 5000km of coastline can be rugged and deserted. It’s all worth it though for the activities and adventures you can get up to here – trekking, diving, mountain biking, kitesurfing, snorkelling and off-road safaris.
Madagascar’s location has led to it becoming a melting pot of cultures, with migrants arriving from all over the Indian Ocean. Culture here reflects their origins from Southeast Asia and East Africa, as well as settlers from India, Great Britain, France, China and the Middle East.
